Looking for a Good Family Movie?

Submitted by on Saturday, 22 October 201111 Comments

About a month ago, I jammed about the trials and tribulations we have as parents trying to find good family movies on TV that everyone in the family can enjoy. I recommended P&G and Walmart’s “Family Movie Night” because of its content specifically geared to delivering what parents look for in a family movie.

I don’t watch a lot of TV, nor do I watch very many movies with my kids. I prefer to take the kids out to the playground, play games with them, build Lego houses, bridges, and towers with them, and read to them. Above all, I make sure the kids get plenty of exercise and creative play time before sitting down to watch a family movie.

I enjoy a good movie as much as the next guy. The problem I have though, is that it is REALLY hard to find a good movie that everyone in my family will enjoy, and that won’t scare the kids (my kids happen to be very sensitive to any scary characters or situations in movies).

And I am not alone in my search for good quality family movie options.

As I mentioned in my family movie jams, Walmart and P&G conducted some cool research that reveals parents are quite keen on finding good family entertainment options.

Here are some of their findings:

  • 94 percent of parents surveyed said it’s extremely or very important that their families spend time together and entertainment is a primary way their families get together.
  • 81 percent said they enjoy watching movies with their families and 75 percent enjoy watching TV together.
  • 69 percent of moms said they wish there were more family-friendly TV programs that they can enjoy with their kids.
  • 75 percent of moms admitted to having to change the channel because of inappropriate content in a program they thought was family-friendly.
  • 71 of parents would go out of their way to find family-friendly TV programs.

If you are similar to the majority of those parents surveyed, and are at your wits end (like me) because you can’t find any family-friendly movies that meet your stringent criteria, one option you have is to expand your selection. You can check out http://www.SatelliteTVFamily.com/ for a few options regarding movie channels and programs that come with Satellite TV. Through these options, you can gain access to complete libraries of family movies. Having more options might help you to find some family movies that are just right for you and your family.

And again, don’t forget to balance out your family movie time with family sports time, family game time, family crafts time, family story time, and family dinner time too! The more things you can do as a family, the better!

What do you think? How do you like to get your family entertainment?

  • What about the percentage of parents who spend every waking second trying to find family-friendly TV programming that is NOT Caillou!

Everyday, all our daughter wants to watch is Caillou. He is a whiny, bald little boy with the most annoying voice! Arg!

Seriously though, we’ve been trying to steer away from cartoons when possible and watch more programs on animals and nature. Things like Planet Earth, and Life documentaries are amazing!

Hi Chris, good point! I have seen the Planet Earth series and it is really great, and my kids enjoyed it too, although my younger one was a bit scared by it at times. They loved to see the animals in it. Awesome to watch if you don’t have easy access to a zoo in your city :-)

We don’t go out and watch movie with my kids but we just stay home and watch DVD with them. I always buy movies that is really for kids, I discourage them watching horror films because filthy distorted faces retain on their mind for about a week and they find difficulty in sleeping. Thanks to our government all tv shows here in our country got all ratings shown before the movie is seen by the viewers, so we may know if it is for kids , PG.

I must appreciate you that instead of watching TV, you are encouraging your children to live an active lifestyle. It is so relaxing to watch a movie with family. This way you will not miss entertainment too. Playing games with children is very good activity to instill leadership and initiative skills in them.

Thanks to cable, there are channels that my kids could view, without me worrying about indecent shows inserting. I agree that there are not much movies that allow the whole family to enjoy together. I could find a few like Shrek for example that I and my family could relate and appreciate.

As a Dad and how crazy busy life can be, I appreciate your time commitment to the variety of activities with your kids. I certainly try to do mix up different activities with my kids especially getting outside. It is challenging with limited hours in the day though, however I appreciate your blog on how important it is. Parents need to keep that in perspective. It is tough to find a movie the whole family can enjoy. We do watch a lot of Disney movies. Disney really has created movies that all ages can enjoy. Great thoughts, keep it up.

Thanks Colin, appreciate your thoughtful insights!

Thanks Sharon! I will have to try out Shrek with my kids and see! Thanks for the tip!
